Constance Garnett

Constance Garnett (1861–1946) was an English translator renowned for her translations of numerous Russian literary classics into English. She was one of the first English translators to introduce the works of Russian authors such as Fyodor Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov, and Ivan Turgenev to the English-speaking world. Her translations played a pivotal role in exposing English audiences to Russian literature during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Despite some criticism regarding the liberty she took in her translations and the outdated language in her versions, Garnett's work is credited for having a significant influence on the reception and understanding of Russian literature in the Anglophone world. Her translations have been widely read and are still in circulation today, although newer translations have become more prevalent.
