George MacDonald Fraser

George MacDonald Fraser (1925-2008) was a British author and screenwriter best known for his series of historical novels featuring the character Harry Flashman. The first of these, "Flashman," appeared in 1969, and the series expanded to include twelve books known collectively as the "Flashman Papers." The books are presented as a discovered cache of memoirs written by the cowardly, roguish, and lecherous Sir Harry Flashman, a character borrowed from the 1857 novel "Tom Brown's School Days" by Thomas Hughes. MacDonald Fraser's works are noted for their meticulous historical research, satirical humor, and engaging storytelling. In addition to the Flashman series, he also wrote other novels, non-fiction works (including the autobiographical "Quartered Safe Out Here" about his experiences in Burma during World War II), and movie screenplays such as the James Bond film "Octopussy" and "The Three Musketeers." His writing is celebrated for its wit, adventure, and lively portrayal of historical events and figures.
