J. Patrick Lewis is an American poet and children's author born on May 5, 1942. He has written over 80 children's books, ranging from picture books to poetry collections, and has been widely recognized for his creative contributions to children's literature. Lewis's work often exhibits a playful use of language and humor, appealing to both children and adults. He switched to writing children's books in his 40s, and since then, his poetry has been published in numerous anthologies, magazines, and textbooks. Some of his notable works include "The Last Resort" and his collaborations on poetry anthologies. Lewis was named the third U.S. Children's Poet Laureate by the Poetry Foundation from 2011 to 2013, a role in which he aimed to raise national awareness of children's poetry. In addition to his literary contributions, he has been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2011 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Excellence in Poetry for Children Award to honor his aggregate body of work.
