Jimmy Swaggart is an American Pentecostal evangelist, Christian music singer, pianist, pastor, and author. Born on March 15, 1935, in Ferriday, Louisiana, he rose to fame in the 1980s for his televangelism, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. Swaggart's dynamic preaching style and his gospel music earned him a large and devoted following. Additionally, he authored several religious books and recorded numerous gospel music albums.
However, his career faced significant setbacks due to scandals. In 1988 and again in 1991, Swaggart was involved in sex scandals that greatly tarnished his image and led to his temporary defrocking by the Assemblies of God, the denomination with which he was affiliated. Despite these challenges, he managed to maintain a following and continues to be involved in ministry and televangelism through his ministry, Jimmy Swaggart Ministries, which includes the SonLife Broadcasting Network.
