Louis Untermeyer

Louis Untermeyer was an American poet, anthologist, and critic, born on October 1, 1885, and passed away on December 18, 1977. He was a leading figure in American literary life for much of the 20th century, known for his wit, humor, and insightful analysis of poetry. Untermeyer published numerous collections of his own verse but is perhaps most celebrated for his comprehensive anthologies of poetry and his efforts to make poetry accessible to a wide audience. His compilations, such as "Modern American Poetry" and "Modern British Poetry," played a significant role in defining the canon of English-language verse during his time. Additionally, Untermeyer served as a consultant in English Poetry to the Library of Congress, a position now known as the Poet Laureate, from 1961 to 1963. Despite facing blacklisting during the McCarthy era due to his political views, he remained an influential voice in the arts.
