William Weaver (1923–2013) was an eminent American translator, author, and expert on Italian literature. He is best known for his masterful English translations of works by some of Italy's most renowned authors, such as Umberto Eco, Italo Calvino, and Primo Levi. Weaver's translations played a significant role in introducing these authors' works to the English-speaking world, and he garnered numerous awards for his contributions to literature and translation, including the National Book Award for Translation. His translation of Eco's "The Name of the Rose" is especially celebrated. In addition to translating, Weaver also wrote critical essays and reviews, and was a professor of literature. His work has been instrumental in bridging the gap between Italian and Anglophone literary cultures.
