On the surface, it was one of rigid convention and apparently unbreakable mold of matters, etiquette, and social order – a world where the slightest departure from the accepted values was regarded almost as an outrage. Wilde succeeded in disturbing the surface, and while many recognize his gifts, and applauded his arrival in society, and the world of art, there were many who presented him, and who saw his fall from Grace as a justification of every sort of rigid repression. So successful where his detractors that 20 years after his death is genius, was still largely unrecognized.
