Overall from a philosophical perspective I think the author probably has immigrate parents or grandparents, thus straddled essentially two worlds. Inside his home probably would have been like the old world and outside his apartment was mostly different “thus” the new world. In his you he see the world change through human nature. Some things lost and somethings gained. Wow. This is a very good book.
