If one is interested in American history, this is a very compelling and insightful read. It's a really terrific book! Manchester fought as a US Marine in the World War II Pacific Campaign. He revisited the sites and shares his memories of those historic, bloody and hard-fought battles 35 years later. He documents this late 1970s trip as he tries to confront and help rid himself of the horror of those events. Great insight into how Americans viewed these people and events as they actually unfolded. They did not always interpret them in the way we might imagine today!
