This volume on Captain Linnaeus Tripe, who photographed extensively in India and Burma in the mid-19th century, offers brilliant pictures that display the unusual combination of a surveyor's eye and an artist's passion. Captain Linnaeus Tripe (1822-1902) occupies a special place in the history of 19th-century photography for the outstanding body of work he produced in India and Burma (now Myanmar) in the 1850s. Introduced to photography by those who saw it as a pastime, he recognized that it could be an effective tool for conveying information about unknown cultures. Under the auspices of the East India Company, he took many photographs of Buddhist and Hindu architecture and dramatic landscapes not seen before in the West. His military training gave his work a striking aesthetic and formal rigor and helped him achieve remarkably consistent results, despite the challenges that India's heat and humidity posed to photographic chemistry. This sumptuous volume features photographs from Tripe's two major expeditions: to Burma in 1854 and to southeast India in 1857. Essays explore the evolution of his practice and the importance of the sites he recorded, while maps and a chronology provide an overview of his life and travels.

This is the catalogue for an exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, which explores the considerable contributions of Virginia Dwan and her legendary gallery to post-WWII American art.It is being carefully curated by Press author James Meyer. Founded by Virginia Dwan in 1959, the Dwan Gallery was a leading avant-garde space with locations in Los Angeles and New York, presenting the art of Franz Kline, Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, Sol LeWitt, and Robert Smithson, among others. Where the Los Angeles gallery featured abstract expressionism, neo-dada, and Pop, the New York branch reflected the emerging movements of minimalism, conceptualism, and land art. The activities of the Dwan Gallery transpired not just in and between Los Angeles, New York, and Paris, but also in the wilderness of the American West, where Dwan fostered a new genre of art known as earthworks (land art). A keen follower of the Parisian art scene, Dwan also gave many nouveaux realistes such as Yves Klein their debut shows in the United States."

Jacopo Tintoretto (1518-1594) was among the most distinctive artists of the Italian Renaissance. Yet, although his bold paintings are immediately recognizable, his drawings remain unfamiliar even to many scholars. Drawing in Tintoretto's Venice offers a complete overview of Tintoretto as a draftsman. It begins with a look at drawings by Tintoretto's precedents and contemporaries, a discussion intended to illuminate Tintoretto's sources as well as his originality, and also to explore the historiographical and critical questions that have framed all previous discussion of Tintoretto's graphic work. Subsequent chapters explore Tintoretto's evolution as a draftsman and the role that drawings played in his artistic practice--both preparatory drawings for his paintings and the many studies after sculptures by Michelangelo and others--thus examining the use of drawings within the studio as well as teaching practices in the workshop. Later chapters focus on the changes to Tintoretto's style as he undertook ever larger commissions and accordingly began to manage a growing number of assistants, with special attention paid to Domenico Tintoretto, Palma Giovane, and other artists whose drawing style was influenced by their time working with the master. The book is published in conjunction with the exhibition Drawing in Tintoretto's Venice, opening at the Morgan Library & Museum, New York, in 2018 and travelling to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in early 2019. All of the drawings in the exhibition are discussed and illustrated, and a checklist of the exhibition is also included in the volume, but the book is a far more widely ranging account of Tintoretto's drawings and a comprehensive account of his work as a draftsman.
