Alice James

Alice James was an American diarist, born on August 7, 1848, and the youngest sibling of the renowned James family, which included her brothers, the philosopher William James and the novelist Henry James. Despite her own intellectual talents, Alice lived in a time when societal constraints limited opportunities for women, and her own chronic illness further restricted her activities. Much of her life was spent in invalidism, struggling with psychological and physical ailments that were not fully understood at her time. Alice James is best known for the posthumously published "The Diary of Alice James" (1934), which she began keeping in earnest after moving to England for health reasons in 1885. Her diary reveals her keen observations, sharp wit, and the introspective exploration of her own life and condition. It is also a window into the cultural and social milieu of her time, particularly for women of her class and intellectual stature. Although Alice James was not widely known during her lifetime, her diary has since become recognized for its literary significance and its candid portrayal of her struggles with the constraints of her era. Alice James died on March 6, 1892, at the age of 43.
