Exhibition of 80 Drawings in colour-- a good selection Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2015 This exhibition of 80 drawings was first shown in Edinburgh, then in The Frick Collection NY and the The Fine Arts Museum Houston between 1999--2001 The National Gallery of Scotland ( founded 1850 ) has some 14,000 drawings 62 % are Scottish Drawings 12% are Italian, 11% are English 7% Dutch and Flemish, 3% French 2% Gebrman and Swiss and 3% miscellaneous There is a brief 3 page History of the collection which is well worth reading ( The National Galery of Scotland has a smallish but distinguished collection of Old Master Paintings Until post WWII the Prints and Drawings where the poor cousins ) There are 80#Drawings which I think are all illustrated in colour Drawings are fragile and very light sensitive so one doesn't always get to see the drawings you want Some big names are not in the exhibition like Durer, Michelangelo and Rembrandt. ( Michelangelo's are realitivley uncommon) By the same token ,there is a good Leonardo and a good Raphael--Study for the Modonna of the Fish. ( I prefer there other Raphael-- ex Chatsworth collection) Most#artists are represented by one drawing There is a good selection of drawings in this exhibition The text is well written and the colour#illustrations are very good Notes are in the back and there is an artist index Summary An enjoyable and xhibition from the collections of The National Gallery of#Scotland Remember Scotland is a small part of Great Britian. In 2011 the Scottish population was 5.3 million, so this is a very good showing for there population size
